Morning Sickness - What Researchers are Learning
With the advances of science and medical technology, we still do not have a clear understanding as to what morning sickness is. There is many ideas of what causes it and what it does to the pregnant body, but there is not one solid answer that answers all of the questions. Some researchers have found a few answers, or at least what they believe are the answers to why the pregnant body reacts like it does when you are pregnant. Believe it or not, it may even be 100% logical.
At a University in New York, researchers have done some rather exhaustive studies to try and determine what causes morning sickness, or at least to answer the question of why the pregnant body reacts in the way it does during pregnancy. What they have determined is that perhaps the pregnant body is actually going through this in a way of helping to nurture the growing baby. These scientists painstakingly researched different people that involved over 80,000 different pregnancies. What they found out was that all of the symptoms of morning sickness happen during the most sensitive times of the baby's life.
While your baby is developing, you may find that you are sensitive to certain foods, regardless if they are your favorite or a specific type. In example, a lot of women find strong smelling foods such as fish, vegetables and meats as a problem. Some even find eggs and chicken as a problem.
Researchers feel that the act of vomiting is a way that the body is getting rid of harmful chemicals and bacteria that is trying to enter the body through food. This is the natural motherly instinct of protecting the child as well as the mother from illness and food borne sickness.
To prove that this claim is true, researchers visited parts of the world where people tend to eat more vegetables than meat. The rate of morning sickness was much lower in those countries. This proves that morning sickness is effected by what a woman eats during her pregnancy and that morning sickness is a method of getting rid of unhealthy materials that the woman may be ingesting.
Even though there is no definite conclusion to this, the theory does seem to work well. It is important that the mother understand that this is a natural way to protect the young child developing inside of her. It is also a way for her body to protect her from harm.
However, regardless of the reason why morning sickness occurs, if morning sickness occurs to the extreme and you find yourself unable to keep down any fluids or meals, contact your doctor. Dehydration is a serious illness that shouldn't be ignored. It could put not only your life in jeopardy but the life of your unborn child. So if you feel as if your morning sickness is going to extreme, contact your doctor at once.
